Dust masks are personal protective equipment PPE that filters inhaled air. They are used during work to reduce exposure to airborne particles, including dust of various kinds, aerosols, paint, smoke and toxic vapours. Filtering facemasks or dust masks are classified according to their protective effectiveness, level of protection of the respiratory tract, and their ability and effectiveness to filter; the levels of protection are: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 masks.
Here is an overview of the protection classes of Ffp-certified masks:

• Protection class FFP1: this class offers minimal protection of airborne particles, filters out 80% non-toxic dust, recommended for home use.
• Protection class FFP2: FFP2 masks provide medium protection, filtering 94% of airborne particles down to 0.6 microns. This type of dust mask can be used to protect against toxic dust such as coal, asbestos, marble.
• FFP3 protection class: The reusable FFP3 mask provides the highest protection class for respiratory tract protection, filtering 99% of airborne particles down to 0.6 microns. Ffp3 masks are recommended for protection against toxic and hazardous dusts such as those generated during the processing of substances such as uranium and plutonium, and are also used to protect against pathogens such as viruses and bacteria.
